12 steps to healthy travel

Learn about the medical issues before you leave, especially malaria, diarrhea and animal bites. |

Find out where you’ll get your medical care before you need it. |
3. |
Be proactive about your health (diet, sleep, hygiene…). |
4. |
Boil it, bottle it, peel it, purify it, cook it … or forget it. |
5. |
Use insect precautions and antimalarials as recommended. Don’t believe everything you hear about malaria and antimalarials … just what I tell you! |
6. |
If at all possible, do your travelling during daytime hours. Beware of your method of transportation. |
7. |
Be sensible in the heat and the sun. |
8. |
Avoid HIV/AIDS and other STDs. Use a condom if you are sexually active, and beware of your medical care (injections, blood tests, transfusions, etc.). |
9. |
Be aware of your mental health while you are away. |
10. |
Learn about environmental risks – jet lag, motion sickness, altitude sickness, etc. |
11. |
Avoid dogs, monkeys, and other furry animals. If you get bitten, wash it, go for good medical care … and call me, or your own doctor! |
