Travel Doctor Book

About Us

I am a Family Doctor in Toronto and the Director of The Travel Clinic. I graduated from medicine at The University of Toronto in 1975, and received my Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from The London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 1977.

Since that time, I have practiced family medicine, as well as travel and tropical medicine. I am the medical advisor to several non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including Voluntary Service Overseas Canada (VSO), Right To Play, Canadian Crossroads International, Engineers Without Borders and the International Development Studies program at Scarborough College. I am also the Chairman of the Board of Canadian Feed The Children.

My travels, for both work and pleasure, have taken me to all of South America, Haiti, Guatemala and Honduras, India, Nepal, Kenya and Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda and Cuba. I have eaten all of the same food as you, travelled the same roads as you, and encountered many of the same problems as you. Aside from some memorable bouts of Montezuma’s Revenge and many near misses on the roads, I have managed to stay healthy most of the time. Hopefully, so will you.

In May 2002, I published the book – THE TRAVEL DOCTOR – Your Guide To Staying Healthy While You Travel. In my opinion (yes, it is a bit biased), it is an excellent resource for travellers, travel clinics, NGOs, companies sending employees abroad, and almost everyone else for that matter! It is available in most bookstores, and online at amazon.com, amazon.ca and indigo.ca.

My staff consists of Indi Lochan, Demi Nasello, Eve Roa and Karon Rautianen. From these wonderful ladies you will get accurate information, timely appointments, the gentlest needles in the country, and the friendliest service.

What We Do

The following services are offered by The Travel Clinic:

  • Pre-travel consultations
  • Post travel consultations for those returning with medical problems (covered by OHIP)
  • All of the required and recommended inoculations
  • Necessary documentation including Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever
  • Written materials and brochures
  • Pre-departure group medical briefings
  • Medical advice and support for international corporations and NGOs

Things change frequently in the field of travel medicine. Outbreaks break out, new medications become available, safety concerns appear, disasters strike. I will try to keep things up to date on my blog, which you can click on at the top of the page. I may also offer my opinion on anything else that interests me!
